Old Town faces the bay, so the sun sets across the cove in the cool season and behind the shophouse roofs in the middle of the year. We work out the sunset for Koh Lanta on your date and light up the tables that catch it.

The deck stands on forty ironwood stilts. At high tide the sea is a metre under your feet and longtails tie up at the rail. At low tide the flats come out and kids can watch fiddler crabs from the stairs.

        Our pier

        Three generations on one pier.

Grandpa Somchai built the first deck over the water in 1987 to sell his catch to the Old Town shophouses. His daughter Jaem started cooking it for the people who came to buy. Today her sons run two boats and the grill, and the stilts are still ironwood.

Lanta Old Town was the island's first port: Chinese-Thai shophouses on stilts, Urak Lawoi fishing families and the morning boats from the Andaman. Come early, walk the street, then eat over the water.
